VANCOUVER -- Almost as soon as they rolled out the fire hoses at Main Street's Old Town Antique Market late Tuesday, the firefighters pulled out protective tarps. That quick thinking may have prevented serious damage to the downtown vintage furniture, glassware and knickknack store at 808 Main St., proprietor Nicole Leslie said. Kol Shaver, the owner of Zephyr Used and Rare Books, wasn't so fortunate. Water that extinguished the blaze on the building's third floor dripped onto a mezzanine level and into Shaver's office, where he kept his most valuable rare books. A book signed by photographer Ansel Adams, books from the 18th and 19th centuries, various art and photography books, and a collection of the Nancy Drew series -- all were soaked.

Annual poster embodies art, tradition
That kind of populist success, like the success of the annual holiday desktop art calendar put out by the commission, is a testament to Eich's ability see that the "public" part of the "public art" equation matters as much as the "art" part. That attitude has helped Eich build a constituency for raising public and private money that gets distributed as millions of dollars in grants each year to area groups and events in the performing and visual arts. As for choosing the art, Eich says "I'm always on the hunt for poster images," and adds that she is already visiting galleries and studios to find art for the 2008 poster. The 2007 poster This year's poster features a rural Dane County landscape by Steven Kozar. That's all the tight-lipped Eich will say about this year because, she adds, she fears that aggressive poster collectors will start hitting distribution sites too early.
