UIC to honor Springfieldian who served in Iraq as a photojournalist

While she says she's still passionate about "capturing the moment" as a photographer, she's not sure journalism is her true calling.

"I love doing it in the military - there's always lots of action, it never gets dull," Ross said. "So I have a feeling if I went to work for the school newspaper or something like that, I might get a little bored too easily."

Profit Picture Brightens at Kodak

Eastman Kodak (EK) finally posted a profit on Jan. 31. That's something of a victory for CEO Antonio Perez -- when he had insisted in August that the photography giant would soon see better days, dubious investors sold Kodak's stock anyway. In the past two years the Rochester (N.Y.) company has lost money, laid off staff, and shut down factories. But now Kodak's cost-cutting has brought it into the black, as it continues struggling to make it in the brave new world of digital imaging.

Kodak earned a net $16 million during the three months ended Dec. 31, compared to a loss of $46 million during the same period of 2005. "I am extremely pleased with our performance in 2006 and our progress in implementing our digital business model," CEO Perez said in a press release Jan. 31.

Kodak has been fighting to remain a giant in photography as its old consumer film business continues to flail.

City traffic cameras to remain on

Rocky Mount's traffic cameras will continue to catch speeders, as the city will not mimic Charlotte's recent decision to kill its camera program, said an assistant city manager.

Rocky Mount's program will continue to operate while the N.C. Supreme Court decides whether to review a ruling that 90 percent of money collected from traffic camera citations must go to local school systems.

While that decision is pending, the city plans to at least finish its contract with Peek Traffic Inc., and consider its options to renew for one or two years when the contract expires on May 29, said Assistant City Manager Peter Varney.

"I think we're planning on continuing with the cameras," Varney said. "The last data we had showed they had the effect of reducing the number and intensity of accidents."

Since the city began using the cameras in 2002, the five sites where cameras are installed have seen a 31 percent decrease in accidents, which have dropped from 49 in 2001 to an average of 34 each year afterward.
